Now, here's a project I've thought about putting together for around 20 years...a portable stereo (aka "Boombox") made from car stereo gear. In this instance, I'm using all Rockford Fosgate gear from 1995 or earlier. A single Punch 45 amplifier will power the entire system, including 4" AUDIOphile component speakers with a 1" silk-dome tweeter and bass notes will be handled by an 8" AUDIOphile subwoofer. This subwoofer should work quite nice as it is designed for a very small 0.33cu/ft sealed enclosure. The "brain" of the system will be another Rockford piece, the PA-1 pre-amp. This unit will control 2 different inputs and provide overall volume, bass, mid and treble controls. I also show off the power source(s), dual 8Ah sealed lead-acid batteries. These batteries are around 4lbs each and should give us 2-3 hours of very loud playback. I'll test the playback time in an upcoming video. Since this is not an accurate representation of the quality of the final product, please refrain from making comments on game production quality. 2) Since BF3 does not have a "Theater Mode" as Call of Duty: Black Ops did, this video was recorded live. Although I have a killer system, there may be occasional graphical hitching due to the fact that I am recording large quantities of in-game video with the graphics turned all the way up. It also gives me my first opportunity of trying out Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11.0. Windows Movie Maker 2011 was good enough for handling 1920x1080 videos from Black Ops' theater mode, but for live in-game video recorded in 1600x1200 on my primary 4:3 monitor, I needed something more. This was a good defensive match where I, made a dramatic bomb defuse, went on some good streaks, and got service stars in two weapons. I also got the Rush Medal and various different ribbons. We were asked to perform as a showcase act at the end instead of compete due to the fact that we had won the year before. 3 Different brand new original compositions specially written for this show were performed. The first being a short, heavy intro, and the other two are lengthier jams that cover a wider range of melodic and rhythmic ideas. This year I tried to make the video and audio as entertaining and professional as possible, as many steps up from last years one camera angle and camera quality audio as possible. So for this year I had four different cameras filming, but unfortunately I was only able to use 3 of those angles. And as for the audio, I'm running 7 channels of Shure Drum Mics and A Single Shure mic on the Bass cab into a Yamaha 8 Channel powered mixer, where I stereo 1/4 inch out to usb and a single recorded track on my computer. This is why unfortunately the mix is not as perfect as I would like it to be, cause there was no one adjusting the recording as we went to make it sound better, but it is still way more professional than camera audio. Anybody who works with concert systems knows that your worst nightmare is somebody videotaping or audiotaping your rig in operation. They sound AWFUL. Usually nothing but about 500-600hz. While playing with this DSP, I decided to try taping it to see what it sounded like. I was really surprised. Of course, the camera does not do a good job on deep low end, these Shearer subs are useable down to 38hz or so, and they are thundering even if you can't hear it well. The worst part about a steel building is that when you are testing low frequency speakers, the building walls suck out a huge amount of the low end. If I go outside, the low end is much stronger coming through the walls of the building, so a significant amount of SPL is being sucked outside. Current whiz-bang concert systems are horribly inefficient, and take colossal amounts of amplifier power and gobs of digital processing horsepower to make them sound decent. So this experiment is about taking an old-school rig and applying moderate amounts of DSP to time align it, do basic generic EQ, and experiment with some unusual crossover profiles. The processor is a Crown USM810 with updated firmware, which is kind of a "Swiss Army Knife" DSP, that will do lots of different things unrelated to basic system processing, but which functions well as a system controller.
