I give you the most I could capture before a battery died on the recorder and a little after I quickly replaced it with another. I own the Sanyo ICR - FP 600D Digital Voice Recorder. I had it set to high sensitivity level. I stood just outside my door, then moved to the sidewalk, then the backyard on the pic-nic table, hand held high the whole time. I have to say I am impressed even knowing this devices indoor capabilities to "tap a room" if you will. Works excellent even on low sens. level. You can set it on a surface anywhere in the room and record the whole room, clearly. 1 aaa lasts a long time, can also use a stereo mic, which I also have but did not use. I have only used it once so I forgot in the haste to get what I could just after the ball dropped. So yes, this is a mono recording so yes it would sound even better with the external mic. I will let you know it can also be used as an mp3 player as well. It costs just under 0. I use a single headphones jack satellite system with it. 3 speakers, 1 sub 2 sats. Simple 30 dollar best buy get you buy system. More than enough to get your audio from. I could go on, but I am not a salesman nor a time waster. Have a good day people.
